The Anchorage Community YMCA swim lesson program is designed to give every child a chance to grow and succeed while learning to swim. Each swim lesson is taught by a trained instructor. Our swim lessons offer a low student-teacher ratio to help children safely develop their skills and confidence in the water. Each class is 25 minutes in length.
If you would like to sign up for swim sessions please contact the membership counter @ 563-3211 or email the Aquatics Department at firstname.lastname@example.org
Call 563-3211 and we will help you register. We will ask for information on your family if you are new to the Y and will also ask for information on your child’s age and swimming experience. First registered are first called for members and those in prior lessons and then for prospective new students. If you have received a message regarding lessons, contact us as soon as possible as slots fill up fast.
Registration for lessons

Private Swim Lessons
Private swim lessons are also available. Once you are registered, a YMCA instructor may chose to teach a private lesson, and will contact you to set up times and dates for private lessons. Member rate $125.00 & Non Member Rate is $160.00 for 5 lessons
These lessons are designed to help the parent help his or her child become more comfortable in the water. Classes planned would last 1 month for 7 -30 minute lessons during the day on Mondays and Wednesdays. Please ask member services if you would like to register. Cost will be the same as regular lessons.
Swim Team is a natural next step after completion of our swimming lessons. Contact Lauren Langford @907-563-3211 or email@example.com for more information and practice placement. We strive, but do not guarantee we will be able to place swimmers at the same times as our swim lesson swimmers.
Our commitment is for your child to learn to be water safe. These are our swim lesson levels.
Pups (First Level)
This level is for children who have had no prior lesson experience or are not yet comfortable putting their face into the water. The focus is adjustment to the water and swimmers learn to blow bubbles, put their heads underwater and do bobs. They also practice assisted front and back floats and jumping in from the side. We provide a fun and safe introduction to the water.
Otter (First Level)
This level builds on what has been taught in the pups. They learn to float on their back and belly unassisted and are introduced to the arm movements of crawl and back strokes. They are taught the T-start and how to do torpedoes (front and back float and kick) with assistance, with the goal of preparing students for the independent basic water skills taught at the next level.
Salmon (Second Level)
This level has swimmers learning to swim crawl and back stroke for 5-10 meters and torpedoes on front and back all without assistance. Flutter kick is emphasized and swimmers are required to kick a half -length of the pool with a water noodle before moving to the next level. Swimmers also learn to tread water.
Dolphin (Second Level)
Swimmers continue working on crawl and back strokes, specifically on breakouts (off a T-start from the wall) with good form. Swimmers now kick a full length of the pool and also are introduced to breast stroke kick and to tread water for 15 seconds.
Orca (Third Level)
Swimmers here gain endurance to swim a full length of the pool crawl stroke with correct side breathing and a full length of backstroke also with proper form. Kicking emphasis will be on a strong flutter kick, a legal and effective breast stroke kick and a dolphin kick. We teach a forward somersault and tread water for 30 seconds.
