Alaska Kayak Academy - Winter Classes 2010
Beginning Paddle Classes
Price includes all equipment, all you need is swim suit or shorts and a T shirt.
This a 6 hour class taught over a 3 session period, 2 hours per session,
designed for the beginner or the novice with little experience.
Skills Learned: Safe entry and exit from a kayak, flipping and wet exit, all
strokes, forward, reverse, sweeps, draws, skull, and rudder strokes. Learning
balance and how to shift your weight is the most critical skill for stability and
performing effortless turns.
In addition students are introduced to beginning fundamentals of the roll.
Students will also learn about different types of kayaks, paddles, and
coldwater immersion clothing
Sea Kayak Safety Class
This is a one day class that meets for 3 hours. Two hours of water practice
and one hour of classroom presentations.
Skill Learned: Students will capsize a sea kayak, exit the boat and learn
several solo and assisted techniques to re-enter the swamped kayak.
You will also learn the T-rescue, boat over boat rescue, several techniques for
towing both a swimmer and a kayak. The last hour we have a classroom presentation on safety concerns in Prince William Sound. You will learn safe
areas for day, weekend and week long paddles. In addition we will discuss,
weather patterns, dealing with wind, tide and large vessel traffic.
