STAY WITH US – Your YMCA Membership Choice

Do to an overwhelming supportive response from our YMCA Members and Community please read this letter from our CEO

Dear Valued Y Member,

We deeply appreciate your understanding and patience as we navigate the challenging circumstances related to the Coronavirus and state wide shut downs. We are all operating in unknown territory right now, and will do our best to be here for you and your family in the safest way possible. We will continue to monitor the situation and will be prepared to make adjustments as this situation evolves.

At the YMCA of Alaska, everything we do is guided by our commitment to support our community, and this is even more critical now. When you belong to the Y, you are not only a member of a health and wellness facility, you are a member of an organization dedicated to strengthening our community. In difficult times, the Y pivots in response to community needs, and finds ways to use our resources to offer solutions – and you can help by participating in STAY WITH US-Your Membership Choice.

STAY WITH US – Your YMCA Membership Choice Your membership helps support our efforts to meet the critical needs in our community during this pandemic. Two examples of how the Y is helping include providing child care for children of healthcare workers and other essential community businesses. We also have some staff committed to helping other non-profits deliver food boxes to senior citizens in our community. Also, our wellness staff is making online wellness classes available through our Facebook page and website.

Your YMCA employs over 175 staff members, including lifeguards, water fitness instructors, swim lesson instructor’s, wellness class instructor’s, member service personnel, youth sports staff, child care counselors and custodial staff. In an instant our staff went from 175 to under 20. During the facility flood of 2016 the YMCA closed for 30 days and many of our part time staff were temporarily unemployed. However, because of support by our Y membership who continued to pay their dues, we were able to provide 50% of staff wages even during their brief unemployment. We are asking our membership to consider doing the same thing during this emergency shutdown as well. It will help support those most affected as well as support the ongoing cost of operating the Y, even during a shutdown. That support will assure that when the ‘all clear’ is given your Y will reopen and be 100% staffed and ready to serve.

In our effort to best serve our members and community we are implementing the following:

STAY WITH US Membership Emergency Plan

o All Youth and Young Adult memberships will be put on hold until the Y reopens

o All other memberships will draft as usual with all those dues being considered a charitable donation for which you will receive a donation receipt.

o For those members who choose not to participate, you may call the YMCA from 9 AM to 5 PM and a member service representative will assist you.

Together One Y,

Larry L Parker CEO, YMCA of Anchorage
