EARTHQUAKE DAMAGE

YMCA UPDATE DUE TO EARTHQUAKE

UPDATE FROM THE LAKE OTIS YMCA: PLEASE SHARE WITH THOSE THAT MAY NOT BE ON OUR PAGE .

The good news for the Y is that most of the building received only minor damage. The bad news for the Y is the gym (east & west walls) were significantly damaged during the quake. However, our structural engineers say it can be repaired and have been working on the design to accomplish that. We hope to have that design in the hands of our building & property committee by the week of January 14th. Once we have that report we will be able to cost out the repairs and develop a timeline for repairs and reopening. The preliminary cost and timeline estimates are between $750,000 and $1,500,000 with a completion date of October 2019.

The wildcard in all the repairs is the cost. The Y does not have earthquake insurance and even if we had, the current estimate cost of repairs would have not even fulfilled the deductible. We are currently pursuing all funding options to facilitate the repair as soon as possible. An obvious option may be FEMA. Last week Governor Dunleavy requested a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration which, if approved, will provide access to funds for public and private non-profits (like the YMCA) to apply for assistance.

Currently the plan is to proceed with repairs later this spring regardless of where funding is coming from, we will figure it out. That will include the gymnasium, painting, drywall repair and tile work in the pool area.
